Why is my street so icy?
over 4 years agoA salt and sand mixture is applied to all roads and sidewalks in the Township. In order for this mixture to melt the ice, water needs to be present to create a “brine.” On busy streets, vehicles assist to produce the water by melting some of the ice; on quiet streets, with fewer vehicles, it takes much longer for the ice to melt. In order to reduce the harmful effects of the salt/sandmixture on lawns, vegetation and water sources, the mixture is only applied to the centre of our roadways. As vehicles travel on the roads, the mixture is spread across the lanes of traffic.

Nancy Baxter asked over 4 years agoHi Nancy,
The regulations that cover golf cart use on roadways actually isn't just a Township of Huron-Kinloss By-law it is mandated through the Highway Traffic Act. Unfortunately, Golf carts don't qualify as a low-speed vehicle under the Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations Schedule III and therefore, are not permitted on any roadways.
However, there are other forms of Low Speed Vehicle's that are accepted on the roadways. These vehicles require, at minimum, the following (this is a excerpt from the OPP press release regarding the recent incident in Point Clark involving a golf cart):
- Odometer
- Speedometer
- Windshield defrosting & defogging system and
- Occupant compartment doors
- Headlights
- Turn signal lamps
- Mirrors
- Parking brake
- A maximum speed capability
- Bear a Vehicle Identification Number
- Have seat belt assemblies present
If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact our By-Law Enforcement Officer at 519-395-3735.
